Transforming Network Infrastructure Week in Review: Fiber Mountain, Moor Insight & Strategy, Presidio
You’ve probably heard it before, but just in case you missed it: We’re now at a point at which NFV and SDN proof of concepts are making the transition to commercial deployments. We’ll likely see more of that in the year ahead, but as Moor Insights & Strategy noted in a predictions piece covered by reporter Peter Scott, the adoption curve for these two technologies will probably involve a long, slow journey.
Elsewhere on the Transforming Network Infrastructure front, Scott this week posted an article about Fiber Mountain’s Optical Path Exchange, an optical-electrical-optical switch that routes input port data to various destinations and enables data replication to occur on a bit-by-bit basis with only 5 nanoseconds of latency.
Also this week, reporter Michael Guta explained why professional and managed services provider Presidio is buying Netech Corp. The acquired, he noted, will represent the sixth geographic location for Presidio, which as a result of the deal gets 11 offices throughout the Midwest.
With the arrival of the new year, there were also an array of prediction pieces in the press. One of them comes courtesy of Transforming Network Infrastructure contributor Scott, who offered five tips for better data center management. The basic rundown goes like this: set limits on rack-level capacity; standardize the unexpected; manage end to end; establish benchmarks; and stick to best practices. For details on how and why to take these steps, check out Scott’s article.
In other recent news, privately held Pertino has been purchased by Cradlepoint. The acquired pioneered the use of SDN to deliver cloud-based networks as-a-service for enterprise and small-to-medium business customers worldwide. Cradlepoint says the move enables it to leverage Pertino’s cloud platform and deep technical expertise to bring the benefits of SDN to 4G LTE, broadband, and MPLS wide area networks for SMB, enterprise, government, and carrier organizations.
