NTT Communications Folds in Dimension Data
In 2010, NTT Corp. agreed to buy IT firm Dimension Data. In February Dimension Data and NTT Communications talked about how they were looking into ways they could work together to provide clients with a more unified cloud experience. And this month they announced their plan for doing that.
That entails bringing both of the companies’ cloud infrastructure as a service capabilities under the umbrella of NTT Communications.
"Combining IaaS capabilities provides customers with enhanced global scale and hybrid IT capabilities,” says Leslie Rosenberg, research director at IDC. “The synergy allows each company to play to their strengths – the broad reach of NTT Communications' network and data centers coupled with Dimension Data's technology expertise and consulting capabilities to help enable customers to achieve global scale and accelerate their hybrid IT and digital transformation initiatives."
Dimension Data’s 2018 trends white paper says that “Despite the promise of hybrid cloud, we expect that many organizations will still go into 2018 trying to work out how to get real value from hybrid. In particular, cost containment will continue to be a major issue for firms that run their IT estate on-premise[s] and in the cloud. One possible solution will come from the rise of hybrid cloud management solutions, which will give customers a clearer view of how information – and spend – is distributed across their hybrid cloud estate.
“We also expect to see innovation from cloud providers themselves,” the white paper continues. “Many smaller cloud businesses will specialize in certain industries – out of recognition that offering a generalized service in competition with Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure is a non-starter. But, they will also need to offer a more unified cybersecurity posture – with customers demanding more from cloud providers in this area.”
Dimension Data has 28,000 employees and offices in 48 countries. NTT Communications is a subsidiary of NTT Corp. and the largest telecommunications company in Japan. One of the world’s biggest network operators, NTT runs a global IP network that reaches more than 190 countries and regions. And it has 140 data centers around the world. In addition to its connectivity services for voice, video, and data communications, it offers consulting, security, and other solutions.
"Enterprises have an increasing need for hybrid IT to accelerate their digital transformation. Working together to enhance our cloud and value added services, combined with our industry leading networking, global data center assets and security capabilities, both Dimension Data and NTT Communications will offer clients a more compelling hybrid IT value proposition," said Tsunehisa Okuno, Senior Vice President, Head of Global Business, NTT Holdings. "NTT's extensive R&D investments will also enhance the range of services available to clients."
