Infinera to Supply Midco with Metro and Data Center Interconnect Services
Internet service providers (ISPs) and cable operators are facing increased demand from next-generation services that are bandwidth intensive. In order to deliver these services, they are using their network with greater efficiency to support more traffic with existing infrastructure. As an ISP, cable operator, managed services and now a data center operator in the Upper Midwest, Midco has been looking for an interconnect service solution to bring all of these resources together to improve many of the services it provides. The company selected the Infinera XTM Series for 100 gigabits per second (Gb/s) transport to address its growing network needs.
Midco is diversifying the services it provides to accommodate the IT and communications needs of industries requiring Tier 2 or Tier 3 facilities with the data centers it now operates. The company also has one of the largest optical networks in the region with an 8,400 fiber-mile network that delivers services in urban and rural areas.
The Infinera XTM Series will allow Midco to support metro Ethernet services and to connect its data centers with 10 Gb/s, 100 Gb/s and fiber channel transport services. The addition of the XTM series comes after Midco upgraded its long-haul network last year with the Infinera DTN-X platform. This will give Midco customers an end-to-end Infinera Intelligent Transport Network.
Midco’s existing DTN-X network will have direct wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) interoperability with the XTM Series so it can have a unified end-to-end solution with optimized metro and long-haul networks. This not only introduces a better way to deliver it services, but it also lowers the cost of operations for the company.
"We are pleased Midco is extending the benefits of the Infinera Intelligent Transport Network, offering its customers an end-to-end network from the metro to its core backbone. The Infinera XTM Series extends the benefits of Infinera’s long-haul solutions to the metro and offers cable operators the benefits of scalability, ease of use and superb reliability," said Karl Thedéen, Senior Vice President, Metro Business Group at Infinera.
The XTM Series is a metro packet-optical platform in a single system integrated with Layer 0 and Layer 1 optical transport networking, Layer 2 and Layer 2.5 Ethernet, and multiprotocol label switching transport profile networking. It provides the transport of metro and metro core networks for any service between 10 megabits per second and 100 Gb/s, and beyond. The platform can has multiple applications, including mobile transport, triple-play backhaul and Internet Protocol television (IPTV), business Ethernet, enterprise networks, metro regional core networking and wholesale.
