Mumbai Welcomes Alibaba Data Center
Alibaba Cloud has announced the opening of its first India-based data center in Mumbai, officially opening in January 2018. This is just the beginning as the company shared plans last summer to open two new data centers in Mumbai, India and Jakarta, Indonesia to aid small-to-medium sized businesses in surrounding areas with cloud computing services.
“We are excited to be officially opening our new Mumbai, India data center in early 2018, enabling us to work closely with more Indian enterprises,” said Simon Hu, senior vice president of Alibaba Group and president of Alibaba Cloud.
The expansion comes after the switch from in-house data centers to cloud computing, adding to its scale, and possibly its lead on the competition. According to Gartner, it already has a leg on Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, achieving higher revenue than the three companies. It also saw a 61 percent revenue rise due to enhanced internet sales, shared Reuters.
“These local enterprises are innovative and operating in growth sectors, and we look forward to empowering them through our cloud computing and data technologies. As we build out the Alibaba Cloud network globally, India is another important piece that is now firmly in place. This continues our commitment to India, helping it to develop trade opportunities with other markets in the region and beyond,” added Alibaba.
The new center will offer availability to 33 zones, coverage spreading to mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Australia, the Middle East, Europe, India and the U.S. (East and West Coast). To offer access to Aliaba Cloud Express Connect, Alibaba has partnered up with Tata Communications and Global Cloud Xchange (GCX).
